ETS Strategic Plan Two-Year Report

ETS continued its expansion in 2014 and now includes 30 regular members in 13 countries and 15 associate members covering more than 20 countries. ETS members have operations across the product life cycle from the laboratory through commercial seed production. They are engaged in activities across a wide range of products from corn and soybeans to trees and potatoes.

The development and implementation of excellent stewardship programs and quality management systems are critical to the long-term success of plant biotechnology. These are also key for enabling the agricultural value chain to take advantage of opportunities and meet the challenges of the current and future landscape. The bottom line is clear: robust and verifiable stewardship and quality management systems are important elements of the industry’s freedom to operate.

Since its inception as an independent organization in 2008, Excellence Through Stewardship® (ETS), has been at the forefront in advancing best practices in plant biotechnology. In 2013, the organization embarked on a three year strategic plan to build awareness of stewardship globally, expand membership in the program, provide technical resources for the implementation of stewardship programs and continue to verify implementation through third-party independent audits of our member organizations.

At the two year point of this strategic plan the organization has seen significant growth by more than doubling its roster of participating organizations. ETS and its network have performed outreach and awareness building in more than 20 countries. Publicly available technical resources have been revised and new member only resources have been developed to assist in the implementation of stewardship programs. In addition, verification activities have taken place in more than 25 countries by independent auditors stationed around the world.

At its core, ETS is a collection of organizations that have made a commitment to advance the global adoption of stewardship programs and quality management systems within the plant biotechnology industry. The collection of participating organizations includes small research groups to large multi-national corporations with headquarters spanning 15 countries and operations in more than 90. Their commitment remains strong and we are focused on organizational and program improvements that continue to highlight integrity, responsibility and our drive for excellence.

While ETS has achieved some important milestones over the past two years, we are very excited about the potential opportunities 2015 has for the ETS organization and program as well as the technology and its responsible management.
