The first guide developed by Excellence Through Stewardship (ETS) since 2009 is now publicly available on the ETS website. The Guide for Resistance Management of Biotechnology-Derived Plant Products is intended to provide guidance on the development and implementation of resistance management plans as components of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy throughout the product life cycle. The Guide is available in English, Portuguese and Spanish with Chinese, French and Vietnamese to be added in the coming weeks. The first version of the Guide contains the section on Insect Resistance Management (IRM). Additional sections will be added as they are developed. Currently under development is the Herbicide Resistance Management section.

The development of the Guide was a collaboration between ETS and CropLife International’s Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) and Plant Biotechnology Product Stewardship Project Team. The IRM section requires trait developers and licensees to have processes and procedures in place for:

Conducting resistance risk assessments during product development;
Developing appropriate product- and geography-specific resistance management plans;
Implementing IRM plans in a transparent manner inclusive of all stakeholders;
Promoting farmer adherence to IRM guidelines; and
Investigating and managing potential field resistance situations.
The completed Guide is paired with implementation of a new IRM Audit Component as part of the Excellence Through Stewardship® Audit Program. As applicable, member organizations will include the new component in their overall ETS audit program commitments. The Guide section and Audit Component were developed to strengthen the industry-wide commitment to IRM practices and ensure trait providers and licensees adhere to IRM principles in product development and commercialization of biotech-derived plant products. The Audit Component will focus on key geographies in 2015 with the successful completion of audit commitments related to the IRM component due by December 31, 2016.

ETS is very excited to be introducing the new Resistance Management Guide and Audit Component as it highlights the significant commitment from the technology industry to implement best management practices and provide greater transparency and accountability for IRM.

For questions about the ETS Guide and Audit Component please contact Chris Holdgreve, ETS Executive Director.
